Travails of draping a SAREE !!!

Every Indian woman at some point or the other in her life is forced to wear a saree .... with hilarious results.

My travails started from Class 11 .....

We had a ' Teacher's Day ' ... girls in saree and guys in , well , coloured pants [ what i mean is anything other than our uniform ] .... Day started with me getting up 2 hrs early and waking my mom up 2 hrs early too to drape it for me ...

Then came college ....

my classmates were people who were at home in a saree .... so, Deepavali, Onam , Chingam 1, ... any ' DAY ' was enough for them to turn up in their best ....... and the likes of poor me suffered .....

Walking from point A to B [ A and B being just 100 cm apart took a hell lotta effort !! ]

But my saree collection rapidly increased from 1 to 4 in 4 years.

And now work .....
Saree collection is again increasing , as is discomfort ......

I look and feel like a duck in sarees
The world flatters me and my looks in them
And I feel good and traditional
But also a high degree of discomfort

And the guys have a laugh at my expense ...... suddenly they realise I need to take baby steps ... am tense about tripping over myself ...

Watchful that the saree should not slip out of various places and positions ......

And my elders are never tired of lecturing exactly what our culture and traditions say about women's attire.

Jeans suddenly seem ' ALL MALE' .....

But all said and done , a saree seems to make me feel more like a woman ........

thr traditional Indian 'mundu' aint a cakewalk either:P but yeah, but a saree kind of bestows a ladylike aura...For our social in 10th, the guys wore mundu and the girls wore sarees ..we still looked like 10th std kids and the girls left us speechless:| That was the difference. It was as if they had suddenly morphed into adults or something.

I like traditional India dress...especially gals who wear sarees. Though Jeans and skirts make them look hot, but saree brings that authentic beauty for which I just go....ooooo..la...laa...

I rememeber we had this tradional dress while I Was in engg and one of my groupmate was suppose to join us at around 10 in the morning. We guys waited for her and she reached coll at around 1130...in a saree ofcourse and we were like...alright, so was it 2hrs for u to try this thingy out. And then that poor soul didnt even knew how to run behind us to catch and kick our A**.

:)

saree seems to make me feel more like a woman ........

True the saree does make you feel very feminine. I remember wearing saree for the first time on Teachers Day in High School. Felt so grand, except that after sometime, it started behaving wildly because none of us knew that one has to walk demurely while clad in a saree. And here we were practically running up and down the stairs and down the hall finally ending up looking like dishevelled rag pickers :))

I still prefer my jeans but make it a point to wear a saree on festival days or for weddings. For Onam I wore a Kasavu saree.

btw Belated Onashamsakal!!!

The problem comes when you label something traditional. There is nothing called traditional.A saree or a mundu is the way of dress in kerala because thats supposed to be the easiest (and most comfortable) of all dresses to wear.If you are finding it difficult to wear, then there is something wrong, horribly, somewhere.

And most importantly, dressing up for an occassion is artificiality at its best.I still dont get any point in wearing formals to office unless and until there is a client meeting or unless and until you are comfortable with wearing a belt sucking 78% of oxygen out of your stomach.

wonder what you would feel like in a nightie...(not those frilly lace types:P), but those our moms wear
You'd feel like a different kind of woman(Hihi)

Ever thought about this fact:

Guys can run much faster in Formal clothes compared to gals :)

Dunno..just popped up...

Does that make any sense in the first case??

A Saree can make a mallu girl turn from "cute & sweet" to "hot & sexy" as I have had the pleasure of witnessing myself. However I prefer women in their birthday suits.

but dontyu think the indian woman (or any woman for that matter - remember anna k in the omega ad?) look her very best in a saree? methinks its the sexiest of all dressses.

I agree with you - the traditional dresses are difficult to manage..

Be it the saree or the "mundu" for men..

But when worn, they are really classy...

difficult to manager but worth the effort... there is nothing more classy than a well worn saree

I'm a huge saree lover. I feel a lot more feminine in a saree. My regular wardrobe is jeans and shirts. Wish I had more opportunities to wear sarees.
