The Elephant Update

I have been talking to people. People who have watched elephants grow.
Of all these people , I found a guy who is from an area near an elephant park. It is called a park as elephants are reared for festivals or other uses here.

And what he has to say is that if the elephant is chained such that the chain is tied between both its hind legs , it is a problem. More so , if the length of the chain is so less that the elephant's legs slant at an angle to the ground instead of remaining vertical. This kind of treatment causes knee damage to the elephant.

After talking to him, I went back to the elephant. The elephant was tied with just a chain. A chain attached from one of its hind legs to a tree. And its front legs were free.

When I mentioned this to the guy , he said the elephant is fine in such a case. Of course , it does pain the elephant. But the other option is to set it free, which I doubt if anyone would do.

He then asked me to look for noticeable signs of ill treatment or wounds on the elephant. I checked from a distance , and there were no such problems. I didnt want to get too close to the elephant as I didnt want the mahout to get uneasy.

If I am to go by the guy's words , the elephant is in no distress. But the fact that it is chained should be a source of distress.

hey but i guess elephants are quite well taken care of...when compared to other bullocks..

maybe a few mahouts aint that good chaps..but generally i guess most of em are well taken care of!!

If the elephant doesn't have any injuries, as your friend said, the only thing to do is set him free (maybe is some kind of park). But since you may not be able to get them to do that, I guess you have done all you can.

Try PETA though, they may have some suggestions, or they may keep an eye on his condition.

Nice of you to make the effort...

Well, you have done what you could, n you are satisfied by the elephants current status.
Maybe you can build a rapport with the elephnat by giving it a 'kolla' of bananas everyday. In this way, the mahout wil be at ease wen you are around too :-)
On a lighter note...."I didnt want to get too close to the elephant as I didnt want the mahout to get uneasy"...
You sure thats the only reason?? :-D

n which new blog of mine are you talking about

hey ,
great to hear u really went ahead, found a person and checked out the elephant.
most people would just feel sad and then sit back and not do anything.

the elephant tied, yeah that is something we cannot do much about. maybe smday that will change, but for now all we can do is try to reduce their pains.

you should really think about joining an animal welfare forum

I guess ultimately, the elephant still shouldn't be chained up, but from what that dude said, I guess we can come to the conclusion that the elephant is probably not under enough distress for someone like the SPCA to step in and do something.

I'm not sure what else you can do. You've tried, but outside of breaking him free, I don't know what other options you have.

hi first time on your blog....

its nice that you cared about the elephant, you should have informed some animal rights group...maybe the local forest officer.

you know something weird....elephants are usually tied with a chain so weak that it can break it easily ....but they dont cause WHEN THEY r small these chains are too strong for them to break ...n this gets imprinted in their minds....
since you arote about chained elephants i thought you might be interested in knowing this...

nice blog ...keep it goin

2 nithin :
yeah ..... the same fact was mentioned here ....
it is almost like us humans , right ? the way we are conditioned as children leads to the impossiblity of breaking our chains as we grow older
